The Teacher's Approach to Writing a Business Plan is a step-by step guide to writing a business plan for teachers, intermediate to advanced second language learners of English, and aspiring entrepreneurs. Teachers will find this text to be a useful writing tool for their classes as well as one that provides opportunities for students to use a variety of their skills and talents in the learning process. For pre-Business or pre-MBA students, and for budding entrepreneurs, it is also a helpful source for learning to create and to understand financial statements. The model, which is that of a restaurant, is specific enough to provide an illustration yet broad enough to be customized to the reader's business choice.

Outline

The first section contains readings and guidelines on how to use the book for teachers and students. The second section contains a number of preparatory activities prior to writing the Business Plan. The third section contains Part One, the actual writing of the Business Plan. The fourth section contains Part Two, the financial statements with explanatory notes on understanding each part of each financial statement. The last section, Variation on a Theme, provides a view into the decision-making process with a set of questions developed through experience in a real business setting. Students have an opportunity to tap into their problem-solving skills by working on these questions together. The activity serves as an effective warm-up to the Business Plan or as an independent project to supplement intermediate oral skills or listening/speaking classes.

More Details

The Business Plan provides a strong foundation for developing invaluable and practical business skills which involve managerial decision-making as well as acquiring the ability to read financial statements. The paragraph to paragraph guide engages students in extensive writing practice and makes it easier for the teacher to focus on writing at the paragraph level. In the meantime, the intensity of the subject of business is relieved by the collection of creative activities placed intermittently throughout the book and in which students of a variety of field backgrounds and interests will enjoy, activities such as designing a Floor Plan as well as planning for Advertising and Public relations.

Those who will benefit most from this book are readers who have little or no background in business planning or readers who do have a business background but would like to review their knowledge while practicing in English. The project is task-oriented. By being accountable for a task through which we gather information that will genuinely benefit us, we are motivated to fulfill the tasks all the while being engaged in meaningful interaction through activities that let us communicate in real language environments.
